Moving Flat Stress

I finally finished moving all my things to my new rental flat. It was quite a shock to me and get some time to adjust to because I have lived in my previous flat for 6 years.

I have not moved in 6 years! Wow, that is the second longest time I stayed in an address, after my parents house. Too bad HDB decided to tear down the building. The city view from the common corridor and the breeze were really nice.

And on top of that, I guess staying put in a place too long, you get to accumulate too many things. I know that I have 1 shelf full of anime DVD/VCD. What I did not know is that actually they are close to 2 shelf! And I have accumulated plenty of art books by anime artists, and my collection of figurines is growing fast too.

I guess I have start throwing away my books and notes from my university study, since I have not opened them for quite some time. I have thrown away my old programming text books like those on Java 1.0.2!

So many to pack... sigh...

Anyway, the mover came and ask me $100 extra from the quote given of $180. OUTRAGEOUS! But it is a common practice here in Singapore. If your flat is not at lift-landing floor, they will use that as a reason. If your flat is at lift-landing floor, they will complain that you have many things to carry. If you don't have that many things, then they will complain that you do not pack properly.

I guess they can afford to do all this thing since they will know on the moving day, it is impossible to get a new mover and their victim is at their 'mercy', and they can do this all the time since they know highly unlikely you will be their repeat customer.

I am not talking those international movers. Those are very professional and you use them if you have large antiques or a piano to move. I am taking about local movers, typically a family business who employs ah beng and ah seng as workers and lau beng as the supervisor. I guess you get what you paid for, but still I do not like the way they conduct their business.
Do you have a good experience with a local mover? Let me know. Reply to this post.
