The King, his elephant, and the temples in Bagan

I heard this story from our tour guide, Johnny, about a king (forgot his name), his elephant (not sure about the colour - could be white), and he once made a promise to build temples.

One fine day, he asked the royal elephant trainer to take the beast out, the monks to perform some prayers, and set the elephant off for a day trip.

The king promised wherever the elephant sits down, he will build a temple. Luckily for him (and his subjects who did the actual construction) the elephant did not sit down so often. The royal beast wander around, and ended up sitting at 3 places, and the king ordered 3 temples to be constructed on those sites.

Please help me confirm this story. Who is the king? What is the colour of the elephant (is it white?) and exactly how many temples are there and what are the name of the temples.
